Lectionary Theme: Pentecost: Divine voice in a noisy world; -Sacred Music Sunday

  •

    11. He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake;

    12. and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.

    13. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

    14. He answered, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.”

    15. Then the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram.

    16. Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place.

    17. Whoever escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall kill.

    18. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.” Elisha Becomes Elijah’s Disciple

    1. Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the ruler, and Saul.

    2. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

    3. Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. The Apostles Preach in Cyprus

    4. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

    5. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John also to assist them.

    6. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they met a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet, named Bar-Jesus.

    7. He was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God.

    8. But the magician Elymas (for that is the translation of his name) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul away from the faith.

    9. But Saul, also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him

    10. and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?

    11. And now listen—the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind for a while, unable to see the sun.” Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he went about groping for someone to lead him by the hand.

    12. When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord. Paul and Barnabas in Antioch of Pisidia

    1. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.

    2. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

    3. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.

    4. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

    5. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem.

    6. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.

    7. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

    8. And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?

    9. Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

    10. Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

    11. Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.”

    12. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

    13. But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” Peter Addresses the Crowd

    19. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

    20. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

    21. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

    22. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

    23. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Jesus and Thomas
